Tamarack Neighborhood Watch
Tamarack Neighborhood Watch is comprised of approximately 160 homes in the north portion of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. This group is the largest neighborhood watch group in the area and has been around the longest.

The Tamarack Neighborhood Watch was started over 25 years ago as the Tamarack Heights Neighborhood Watch. In 2003, the name was shortened to Tamarack Neighborhood Watch. The original boundaries for the group were SR-95 on the East, Aviation Drive on the West, Palo Verde North to the North and Kirk Drive on the South. There are some of the original members from the early 90’s who recall the picnics at Rotary Park where they would BBQ’s and enjoy each others company.
In the early days there was a second group that had a neighborhood watch to the north of Palo Verde North. The Captain for that group passed away and the group became inactive. In 2014, those residents were welcomed into the Tamarack Neighborhood Watch. In addition, there are a few residents who live East of SR-95 and on Kiowa Avenue where there is not currently an active neighborhood watch group. Those residents have also been welcome to join and the group has grown from a few dozen homes in the early 90’s to over 150 members today.
The Tamarack Neighborhood Watch has a meeting once a month to get together, have lunch, listen to a guest speaker, and just get to know one another. As the members travel through their neighborhood and see something that doesn’t look right, they check on each other, If they see something suspicious, they call the authorities. The Tamarack Neighborhood Watch is not the type of organization you see in the movies, they do not “patrol” the streets looking in windows. They are just a group of people who believe knowing your neighbor is the best way to have a safe community.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department wants to make the community aware of credit card skimmers that have recently been found at two local gas stations, one in the 2800 block of Chemehuevi Blvd and the other in the 1000 block of Acoma Blvd. S. An employee at each station located the skimmers during a security check of the pumps. At this time, no victims have come forward to report their credit card information being compromised.

January's Tamarack Neighborhood Watch luncheon recap
Thanks to all who attended the first neighborhood luncheon of 2020!
Our guest speaker, Janina Robertson, from Damsel in Defense gave us a lot of great information on keeping ourselves and our families safe. #DamselinDefense #GunsthatStun
Janina let us know violence is on the upswing. We need to lose the mindset that ‘it won’t happen to me or my town is safe’. She reminded us we shouldn't become complacent or forget to be safety conscious. Some things to remember are:
1. Put your phone away
2. Secure your purse / backpack
3. Have your keys in your hand
4. Have your personal protection product in your hand. The bad guys are looking for easy targets, if you are distracted, they can grab you or your belongings easily.
Janina showed how a Stun Gun worked and how it is a great deterrent in many situations. She also has many other items to keep you safe.
Another topic Janina talked about was safeguarding your home. How much distance is between your protection and an intruder in your home? You should have some products throughout your home. Also, never open your door unless you are certain who’s on the other side, or you can verify they have a legitimate reason to be there.

Kathy Stewart updated everyone on the recent Sentinel Drive break in. The suspect is in custody and was a relative of the homeowner. The LHCPD was able to get DNA and fingerprints which were a great help in apprehending the intruder.
Vice Mayor David Lane updated us on the Kiowa project. With the cold weather we've been having recently, the crews are unable to properly prepare/repair/replace the pavement. ADOT will return soon to finish the intersection of US-95 and Kiowa's repaving, they've been reassigned temporarily. The traffic signal is still in process, an ADOT truck has been parked near the northern entrance/exit where the
light will eventually be placed counting cars to assess the need for a signal light. David let us all know the city has the funds for the signal if ADOT does not come through with funding.
Next month's meeting will be the presented by the Lake Havasu Police Department's liaison, Kathy Stewart. Havasu Night Out has been confirmed for Thursday Feb 27 Aquatic Center 5:00 to 8:00 pm. It is important to RSVP for this event, Invitations will be sent out soon. If Kathy does not have an email address for you, the information will be mailed.
We missed those of you who couldn't attend on Wednesday and hope to see you at the next neighborhood gathering.

Recap of the November 2019 Tamarack Neighbor Watch luncheon
Good Morning and Happy Sunday to you all. We had our final luncheon for 2019 this past Wednesday at the Lake Havasu Regional Medical Center. We had 34 people in attendance to hear the two guest speakers Julie Sasseen and Jeni Coke. The hospital supplied the lunch for $10.00 per person and we had lasagna, salad, garlic bread, brownies for dessert and water or soda as beverages. The food was quite good and we learned the cafeteria is open to anyone who would like to stop in and eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. The morning of the meeting they had steak and eggs for breakfast for $4.99. If you are looking for something different and inexpensive this is a good option. We had our usual raffles with the 50.50 being worth $43.00 / $42.00 for the kitty and we had four raffle prizes that Stephanie put together, congratulations to the 5 winners.
Ms. Sasseen spoke about the services the hospital provides including the emergency room, cancer center, cardiology, imaging, occupational health, support services and many more. The hospital is owned by LifePoint Health which is a large multi state company. During the past year the hospital has invested almost 13 million in capitol improvements to the facility and equipment for patient care. They are the largest employer in the City with 708 employees and a payroll of almost 67 million dollars. They paid just over 2 million in taxes, 7.5 million in charity and uncompensated care and spent 587 thousand on community benefit programs. They continue to bring in the latest equipment and procedures to give optimal health care. She also provided brochures and a few other swag items for everyone to take home.
Ms. Coke spoke about her position which is the recruitment of doctors and staff. They have added several new doctors to the staff this year including a spine and neurology surgeon and a new urologist. They are currently trying to recruit pediatric and other specialists. Ms. Coke spoke about the difficulty in attracting doctors to the region because we are in a rural part of the State and do not have many of the amenities the metropolitan areas have. The biggest is the ability for the spouses to find work in their chosen careers. Many of the doctors have spouses that also have high profile careers that require advanced degrees and they need to be in an area where they can put their expertise and skills into their chosen profession. There is also those that wish to be able to shop at the kind of stores you just do not find in rural parts of the Country. With that said they are actively recruiting and they do have those that want to come here for the laid back lifestyle and access to outdoor activities. She also talked about the difference between a non profit hospital and a for profit hospital. The big difference is the non profit hospitals do not have to pay the taxes the for profit hospitals do. They provide the same level of care and the expenses are the same. The cost for services and rates of pay for the staff are the same for either type of hospital. Myself, I am happy we have a hospital in this rural part of the State.
As always the information presented was way better than what I can write in a few short paragraphs.
After the program, I spoke about a few things such as an update on the Kiowa and SR95 project. They are moving along and have added a few things such as the right hand turn lane into the parking lot by the Verizon store. A lot of the work is being done at night so as to not disturb the traffic too much.
The community dinner is coming up on Friday, December 13, 2019. It is an annual event where the City puts on a traditional Christmas dinner for anyone who would like to participate. There will be turkey, ham, potatoes, gravy, vegetables, rolls, dessert and soda and water, everyone in the community is invited to attend, especially those that will not otherwise have a traditional Christmas meal. Every child gets a toy and can have their picture taken with Santa. The toys are provided by the River Riders motorcycle group and the pictures are provided by the Anderson Auto Group.
In the past, 50 turkeys have been donated for the dinner by the food bank, this year that is not possible. Stephanie and I volunteered to provide the turkeys and estimate the cost between $800-$1000. I brought this up at the meeting and put out there that if anyone else would like to chip in it would be welcome. Many of you have already come by and we have collected about $400 to buy the turkeys. Instead of this being a Stephanie and I donation, we have made it a Tamarack Neighborhood Watch Donation. If anyone else would like to participate you are welcome to join in and drop off an envelope to us.

October, 2019 Luncheon
Thank you to everyone who came to the luncheon on Wednesday, 10/23/19, 34 of our neighbors and friends joined us. We had a great lunch prepared for us by Fiesta Mexicana and served by Lisa Badding.
Kryistyna Hook from the Better Business Bureau was our speaker. Kryistyna spoke about the current scams going around and gave us great information on how to keep our personal information safe from the phone scammers and door-to-door sales people. Thank you to those who came out to listen to Allison Meagher Paoli's presentation on Emotional Intelligence. I find different takeaways each time I hear her speak. A hugh Tamarack Neighborhood Watch welcome is extended to Shirl who came as a guest of Frank's, we hope you'll continue to come to the monthly gatherings.
The newly remodeled meeting room at IHOP was a great place for our group! I hope everyone enjoyed the food and great service.
Vice Mayor, David Lane, brought us up to date on the condition of SR-95 and Short Term Rentals turning our neighborhoods into party zones and taking away work force housing for those that need to rent. We are working closely with our elected officials in Phoenix, Senator Sonny Borrelli, Representative Leo Biasiucci and Representative Regina Cobb, to help us with legislation and appropriations to fix those issues.
A huge thank you goes out to Gerry & Joyce Tieri and David & Stephanie Lane for their nurturing and leadership of this neighborhood watch group. I'm truly grateful for their continued support and input. They've left very big shoes to fill. We're looking forward to watching this group continue to grow with your help. Tamarack Neighborhood Watch lunch meeting summary from August 21, 2019
We welcomed Representative Leo Biasucci to update our group on the work done this past legislative session. As most of you know, Leo Biasiucci was born and raised in Lake Havasu City. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management from the University of Arizona. Leo is still involved in our community with his family's business, the Mohave Traffic Survival School.
Representative Biasiucci believes in protecting our borders, helping our Vets receive the care they deserve, helping individuals get off welfare so that they can once again contribute to society, and making sure our educational system is the best for our children.
From the July 20th Mohave Valley Daily News, Sen. Borrelli referred to State Rep. Biasiucci, elected in 2018, as the “rookie of the year,” citing his sponsorship of more bills that passed than any other freshman legislator and praised the younger man’s skill in negotiating the “minefield” of getting legislation passed and the “viper pit” of assembling a budget.

Thank you to all who attended my first attempt at filling Vice Mayor David Lane's shoes, the task is not being taken lightly but it's going to take a while to get all the details in order. With that being said, I would like to apologize for not having the 50/50 and gift drawing, that completely slipped my mind with everything else going on.
Stacey's Southside Grill provided a great lunch and everyone seemed to enjoy the homemade food she prepared for us. The smoked potato salad was my favorite!
